Excerpts of Report from Ghagra, Paschimpatri Village Unit

LITERACY AND NON-FORMAL EDUCATION Continuing with its work in the first semester, the group had a new set of students to engage with this time, given that the previous batch had moved on to a different middle school. So once again, the alphabets had to be gone through thoroughly, followed by certain important things such as the ability to tell time, the importance of attending school, general awareness of one’s surroundings, among other things. Also, students were asked to come up and recite certain pieces aloud, as also make certain drawings. Later on, particular stress was laid on Mathematics, given that the students were generally poor in it. Everything from basic counting to addition, subtraction, multiplication and even division were brushed up, with the concept of times tables introduced to the children. They seemed to take a liking to it. Towards the end, a significant contribution was made to the school by the members of this group – an extensive first aid kit for basic purp

The Making of a Roof

Image
Inspired by Asha, who serves as a maid in the campus ( Link ) but extends her support to her neighbours in terms of providing new roof, the NSS volunteers of Soladahar Unit (the village comprising of Lodha tribals is the poorest in our neighbourhood) decided to go for asbestos roofing of one house with whatever little fund they have and can save from their tiffin allowance. Today it is done. The journey itself taught us a lot. We took this opportunity to unite and engage local youth for constructive activities. This we have started sometime before when they arranged village sports, Saraswati Puja etc. Also, it involved dismantling of current roof, however dilapidated it might be, completing the task in time, addressing questions like why one particular house is chosen and not the other. Accordingly, the local youth gave us five names. We selected their first choice after physical inspection. It was of Bishwanath Ari, a very bright student of Class V who lost his father. The mother wo

Blood Donation Day

Here are glimpses of the Blood Donation Day. The camp started at 10:15 AM and continued up to 1:30 PM. There were many who donated blood for the first time in their life in this camp. We could capture proud moments of few of them. The doctors and staffs of B C Roy Hospital, IIT Kharagpur helped the Blood Bank team from Sub Division Hospital all possible way. The doctors were very strict on having all qualifying medical parameters met. Thus about ten were unfortunately turned back, that included a senior faculty who arrived before others and had sequence no. 1. On the positive side, we had students who could not qualify last year but was in all smile to be able to become a proud donor this time. We also had mother donating blood with small kid patiently waiting outside. The camp was also a meeting place of old timers. Many ex-NSS students came to camp and we discussed how we are trying to reinvent ourselves. A list of all donors is appended at the end. Our sincere thanks to them to co
