Thalassemia Detection Camp

NSS, IIT Kharagpur organized a Thalssemia detection camp at Talbagicha High School on March 01, 2014 where experts from Midnapore Medical College and Saptarshi Vivekananda Society (Link) came. First, a briefing was done on why this test is needed. Leaflet that explains it with graphics were distributed. To motivate students the name of sportsman like Pete Sampras, Zinedine Zidane were cited who are Thalassemia career but do not face issue for the detection. Country like Cyprus is Thalassemia-free today because it is mandatory to get the
detection done before marriage.

There was initial inhibition among high school students as blood was to be collected from them for the test. Previous week a sensitization camp was done and guardians were told. An NSS, IIT Kharagpur volunteer, Sri Aynanta Das was the first to offer himself under the needle! And then there was steady flow. NSS Unit faculty, and two teachers of the school also came forward along with other NSS volunteers. The students could shed their fear and a total of 83 tests were done. Here are few pictures of the event. A local Bengali newspaper reported the event and hailed the effort. An interesting statistics to end with which can be seen in the pictures too. Girls were ahead of boys in this Thalassemia detection camp too!!
